Sofi Hearing Assessment System

Under development

Sofi®* measures automatic brain responses to sound and requires no patient response, supporting frequency-specific hearing evaluation when behavioral audiometry is challenging. During testing, the patient wears an 8-channel EEG headset and listens to tones while watching a silent video. Development studies have demonstrated test durations of approximately 7.5–12 minutes. Sofi® is being designed to enable both air- and bone-conduction evaluation as part of comprehensive hearing-assessment.

*Sofi® is currently under development and is not yet certified for clinical use.

The Problem

Hearing impairment is widespread — affecting an estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide. Many cases remain undetected or untreated, contributing to a global economic burden of nearly US $1 trillion per year across healthcare, education, and productivity costs. (WHO, 2021 )

Research underscores the importance of early evaluation and intervention. Untreated hearing loss is associated with increased risks of cognitive decline and dementia, particularly among older adults. For children, delayed detection of hearing difficulties can affect speech, language, and educational development, with long-term consequences for learning and emotional well-being.

Traditional behavioral hearing tests can be challenging or unreliable for young children, individuals with disabilities, or older adults who cannot consistently respond — leaving many hard-to-test patients underserved and without access to early hearing assessment.

Our Solution

The Sofi® Hearing Assessment System uses our proprietary Rapid-CAEP® technology to measure automatic brain responses to sound. By capturing EEG signals while tones are presented, Sofi® is designed to support frequency-specific hearing evaluation — without requiring a behavioral response from the patient. This approach has the potential to expand access to hearing assessment for individuals who are underserved by traditional behavioral testing and enable earlier evaluation across diverse clinical settings.

Vision

KinderCap, GLAM & KinderGaze

Under development

Our vision concepts — KinderCap, GLAM, and KinderGaze — explore the use of brain-based responses to support objective evaluation of visual function without requiring user input. By presenting controlled visual stimuli and measuring neural activity, these technologies are being developed to help assess visual acuity and visual fields, particularly for individuals who cannot communicate or reliably respond during standard eye exams.

Eye-tracking integration is being designed to support precise stimulus delivery and maintain engagement during testing. Together, these innovations aim to expand access to objective vision assessment across a wider range of patient needs.

The Problem

Traditional vision tests rely on subjective responses, making accurate assessment difficult for children, individuals with cognitive or communication challenges, stroke survivors, and older adults.

When vision issues go undetected, children may experience learning and social difficulties, and adults may face reduced independence, safety, and quality of life.

Because reliable responses aren’t always possible, millions remain underserved by current vision testing methods.

Our Solutions

KinderCap

KinderCap explores the use of brain-based responses to support objective assessment of visual acuity — and, in future, combined hearing and vision evaluation — in preschool children who may struggle with traditional testing. It records neural activity while controlled visual and auditory stimuli are presented, aiming to enable evaluation even when no behavioral responses can be collected. Development has progressed in collaboration with Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg and University Medical Center Groningen.

GLAM

GLAM is being developed to support objective monitoring of visual field function using brain-response measurement. By presenting spatially targeted visual stimuli and analyzing the associated neural activity, the platform is intended to help assess field performance in individuals who cannot reliably perform behavioral perimetry. GLAM development has been supported by Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg.

KinderGaze

KinderGaze explores integrating eye-tracking technology with brain-response measurement to help maintain visual fixation and ensure accurate stimulus presentation. This approach is intended to help improve usability and expand access to objective vision assessment in populations that are difficult to test behaviorally.

BCI technology

Rapid-CAEP

MindAffect’s  technology measures automatic brain responses to auditory and visual stimuli. By combining precisely controlled sensory input with EEG recording, the system analyzes how the brain responds to different stimulus characteristics — without requiring behavioral responses.

Rapid-CAEP® is under development and is not yet certified for clinical diagnostic use.

How it works

Rapid-CAEP® uses pseudo-random, noise-tagged sensory streams that vary across controlled levels (such as tone intensity or visual contrast). The system analyzes the resulting brain activity in real time to identify response patterns linked to those changing stimuli.

This approach is designed to help capture frequency-specific auditory responses and brain-based indicators of visual function, even when users cannot communicate or follow instructions.

What It Enables (intended capabilities)

Hearing

Rapid-CAEP® aims to support objective evaluation of auditory responsiveness by analyzing neural reactions to sound stimuli across different frequencies and intensities — without requiring patient feedback.

Vision

The same analytic framework is being developed to help support objective assessment of visual responsiveness, such as to changes in contrast, resolution, luminance, or spatial location — particularly for individuals who struggle with traditional subjective testing.
